  • What are the laws for UK number plates?
The law on UK number plates changed in September 2021. The new law sets out several key points that must be adhered to. These are: Plates must be made from a reflective material. The front plate should display black characters on a white background. The rear plate must display black characters on a yellow background. Plates should not have a background pattern. Plates should be marked with a British Standard number. For plates fitted after the 1st of September 2021, this is ‘BS AU 145e’. The characters on the number plate must not be removable or reflective. If the plates were fitted after 1st September 2021 the lettering must be a single, uniform shade of black.
  • Are 3D & 4D number plates legal?
You will be relieved to know that 3D & 4D number plates are 100% legal in the UK. The gov.uk website states that you can have 3D/4D (raised letters) on your number plate.
  • What is a short number plate?
A short number plate is a plate that is shorter than a standard size number plate. A standard size number plate in the UK is 520mm long by 111mm tall. Some vehicle registrations may be less than 7 digits and therefore in some cases, the owner may prefer a shorter number plate. There is no issue with the physical dimensions of the number plate, but if you want to make sure that your number plate is legal then the size and spacing of its characters must conform to DVLA rules.
  • Are tinted number plates legal?
No, tinted number plates are not legal. If you would like tinted number plates, these are only for show use and are not suitable for road use.
  • Will a 3D & 4D number plate pass MOT?
Providing the characters are legally spaced and in the correct font then yes, 3D & 4D number plates will pass MOT.
  • Will carbon 3D & 4D number plates pass MOT?
No, carbon 3D & 4D number plates are not legal. Letters on the number plate must be black in order to be road legal.
